UAE Stops Cyberattacks on 600 Government and Private Organizations During Global Data Breach

The UAE Cybersecurity Council said on Monday that it stopped cyberattacks on 634 government and private organizations. These attacks were linked to a global data breach by a hacker group called “rose87168.”

Cybersecurity Attack

Hackers tried to steal data from important sectors in the UAE, but the attack was stopped, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

A hacker named “rose87168” broke into Oracle Cloud’s login system (SSO) and directory system (LDAP). This led to a leak of about six million customer records worldwide, including sensitive passwords, said Mohamed AlKuwaiti, head of Cybersecurity for the UAE Government.

About 140,000 organizations worldwide may have been affected, including 634 in the UAE. Among them, 30 are government offices, 13 are private businesses, and the rest belong to other categories.

The Cybersecurity Council said emergency response systems were activated to protect UAE’s online space and stop further attacks. Officials are also closely monitoring the situation to prevent more threats.

After the attack, all government and private organizations were told to improve their cybersecurity and report any suspicious activity.

Large Exposure to Cyber Risks

A recent report by the UAE Cyber Security Council and CPX found that more than 223,800 digital assets in the UAE could be vulnerable to cyber-attacks. It also revealed that half of the serious security weaknesses have not been fixed for over five years.

Cost of Data Breaches

In 2024, the average cost of a data breach was $4.9 million worldwide. This includes losses from business disruptions, customer responses, and problems with tracking data, according to IBM.

The cost of data breaches in the Middle East, especially in the UAE, is among the highest in the world. The region recorded the second-highest data breach costs globally.
