Orascom-Led Group Starts Commercial Operations for Red Sea Wind Farm Project in Egypt
Orascom Construction announced on Tuesday that the 500 megawatts (MW) of the expanded 650 MW wind farm in Ras Ghareb, Egypt, has started commercial operations, six months earlier than planned.
Wind Energy Project
The project is being developed by Red Sea Wind Energy, a group made up of France’s Engie (35%), Orascom Construction (25%), Toyota Tsusho Corporation (20%), and Eurus Energy Holdings (20%) under a 25-year BOO (Build-Own-Operate) agreement.
The wind farm will provide clean energy to over 1 million homes, helping reduce carbon emissions by about 1.5 million tons each year, and supporting Egypt’s energy goals.
Once it starts commercial operations, the project will become the largest operational wind farm in Africa, according to the Cairo-based construction company.
The group is also working on a new wind project that will produce more than 900 MW of power on a nearby site.
Orascom Construction was responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the plant, including all civil and electrical work. The company finished the work ahead of schedule without any accidents.
Orascom Construction plans to grow its renewable energy and concessions business. It now has 912.5 MW of wind power capacity and three water projects in Egypt, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
Other Projects
In September last year, Orascom Construction announced that the group had extended its Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Egypt’s Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to add 150 MW to the existing 500 MW Red Sea Wind Energy project.
The rest of the power will be connected to the national grid by the third quarter of 2025.
The group also developed Egypt’s first Independent Power Producer (IPP) wind project, the 262.5 MW Ras Ghareb wind farm, which has been operating since October 2019.
In September last year, a group led by Colas Rail, including Orascom Construction and Hitachi Rail, signed an $885.6 million contract with Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) to upgrade Cairo Metro Line 1. Orascom Construction has a 35% share in this project.
In November 2023, Orascom Construction signed two contracts with Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels to build two major transportation projects in Egypt. The same month, the group also signed a $1.4 billion contract to build a new metro system in Alexandria.
In 2023, Orascom Construction won new projects worth $5.8 billion, with $3.8 billion in Egypt and the UAE.
The company is listed on both Nasdaq Dubai and the Egyptian Exchange.
