Libya’s energy company Mellitah Oil & Gas plans to drill eight gas wells in the sea. The goal is to increase gas production by 160 million cubic feet per day, the state-owned National Oil Company (NOC) said on Tuesday.

Drilling Work

Mellitah will start drilling new gas wells at the offshore site called Formation A, which is in water up to 100 meters deep.

The drilling will begin soon after the Valid Rig, owned by Borr Drilling, arrives at the site. This is part of Mellitah’s plan to increase gas production from the sea.

Mellitah is a joint venture between Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) and the Italian company Eni. The company is already working on other offshore projects, including the Sabratha platform, which can produce 986 million cubic feet of gas per day and around 31,000 barrels of condensate. Sabratha is located 110 kilometers off the Libyan coast in the Bahr Essalam field.

This drilling project supports Libya’s bigger plan to grow its energy industry. In January, NOC and Eni signed an $8 billion deal to develop two new offshore gas fields. These fields are expected to produce about 850 million cubic feet of gas per day starting in 2026.

More Gas Production

The NOC said these new projects show Libya’s strong commitment to increasing gas production for both local use and export.

The drilling is expected to finish in 15 months. Once done, it will help provide a more stable gas supply to local power plants, cement factories, and iron and steel industries, according to the NOC.

Last month, the Mabrouk Oil Operations Company restarted oil production at the Al-Mabrouk oil field after being shut down for 10 years, the NOC said.

Restarting the Al-Mabrouk field is an important step for Libya’s energy industry, which has had many problems in the past due to political and security issues.

Libya’s Energy Industry

Since 2011, Libya has faced challenges in keeping oil and gas production steady because of damaged infrastructure and internal conflicts.

A more stable and growing energy sector could help bring more foreign investment into the country, especially in oil and gas services.
