Egypt’s El Sisi and Donald Trump talk on the phone about Gaza and Red Sea travel
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and US President Donald Trump talked about ways to bring peace to the Middle East. This could help make travel through the Red Sea safer and smoother.
El Sisi and Trump’s Phone Call
Egyptian President El Sisi got a phone call from former US President Trump on Tuesday. Trump wished him a happy Eid al-Fitr, according to a presidential spokesperson.
They talked about making the relationship between their countries stronger and discussed the latest events in the Middle East. They also talked about efforts to bring stability to the region, especially the situations in Gaza and Yemen.
This conversation happened after an Arab summit proposed a $53 billion plan to rebuild Gaza, which Israel and the US rejected. Instead, the US supports Trump’s idea to move Palestinians from Gaza, but many regional countries, international organizations, and human rights groups oppose this plan.
Red Sea Attacks
Trump wrote on Truth Social that they also discussed military actions against the Houthis in Yemen, who have been attacking ships. They also talked about possible solutions for the crisis in Gaza.
This comes after the US President warned last month that he would “completely destroy” the Houthis. Since the war between Israel and Hamas started in 2023, the Houthis have attacked over 100 ships in the Red Sea.
Because of these attacks, many shipping companies are avoiding the Suez Canal and using longer, more expensive routes instead.
Impact on Egypt
Last month, El Sisi said that Egypt lost about $800 million in one month due to the drop in Suez Canal revenue caused by the attacks. In December, he said the total losses for the past year were around $7 billion.
The Houthis have promised to keep attacking US ships in the Red Sea in response to US airstrikes on Yemen, which recently killed 53 people. This was the largest US military action in the Middle East since Trump became president again in January.
