Abu Dhabi’s utility company TAQA has bought all of the UK’s Transmission Investment
Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) said on Thursday that it has fully bought Transmission Investment (TI), a UK energy and utility investment company, for an amount that has not been revealed.
Acquisition
TAQA, an Abu Dhabi utility company, has announced that it is acquiring TI, one of the largest companies in the UK that manages offshore transmission (OFTO) assets linking offshore wind farms to the UK grid.
This deal will give TAQA, which is listed in Abu Dhabi, a team of over 40 full-time employees at TI who have skills across different sectors and can manage technical and development work from start to finish.
TI will now become part of TAQA Transmission, which is a branch of TAQA that develops and manages high-voltage power and bulk water transmission systems.
TAQA said the acquisition of TI will help them establish a presence in the UK electricity transmission market and expand into other European and international markets, taking advantage of TAQA’s strong position.
Earlier this month, TAQA and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) signed an agreement to develop energy projects with a combined power generation capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW).
Key Quote
TAQA Transmission CEO Dr. Afif Saif Al Yafei said, “IRENA estimates that from 2024 to 2030, around $717 billion per year must be invested in grid infrastructure to meet climate goals. This deal will allow us to use TI’s strong abilities to support our international growth and contribute to the UK’s Net Zero goals for 2050, as well as our wider sustainability goals.”
Offshore Electricity Transmission
TI, which began operations in 2009, is one of the largest companies in the UK’s offshore electricity transmission industry, managing assets worth around $4.08 billion (AED 15 billion) across its 11 offshore transmission projects.
TI is also involved in major interconnector projects in the UK, like the FAB Link Project and the LirIC Project. These projects will connect Great Britain with France and Northern Ireland through new underwater electricity links, with a total capacity of about 2 GW.
