A group led by Turkey has won a $5.6 billion contract for the Dubai Metro Blue Line project from the RTA

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Thursday that it has awarded the $5.6 billion (AED 20.5 billion) Dubai Metro Blue Line project to a team of companies led by Türkiye. The project will cover 30 kilometers and include 14 stations.

Blue Line Project

The contract for the Blue Line project was awarded to a group of companies that includes Türkiye’s construction firms MAPA and LIMAK, responsible for building the infrastructure, and the Chinese company CRRC, which will manage the rail systems. According to RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer, this group was selected through an international bidding process.

The Blue Line will offer several benefits, such as reducing road traffic in the area by about 20%, cutting travel times to between 10 and 25 minutes, and increasing property values around the stations by 25%.

The metro line will serve around one million people living along its route, including residential areas, universities, and new developments. It will also provide a direct connection to Dubai International Airport.

Important Quote

“The new Blue Line matches the goals of Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. It helps make Dubai a better city to live in by offering eco-friendly and flexible public transport options. These improvements will make it easier for residents and visitors to get around, improve their quality of life, and strengthen Dubai’s reputation as a global destination for events and activities,” said Al Tayer.

“The Blue Line also supports projects like the ’20-Minute City,’ which aims to ensure that 80% of essential services are within a 20-minute commute, while encouraging development around public transport hubs.”

Big Numbers

The RTA expects the Blue Line to serve 200,000 passengers daily by 2030, increasing to 320,000 by 2040. Currently, the Dubai Metro carries 850,000 passengers daily, making up 60% of public transport users in the city.

What to Expect

The RTA announced that construction of the Blue Line will start in April 2025. The line will be ready and fully operational by September 9, 2029, marking the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro Red Line.
