UAE’s IntelliGrid wins a $480 million contract from SOCAR to improve Azerbaijan’s energy systems using AI technology
IntelliGrid, based in Abu Dhabi, has signed a $480 million agreement with Azerbaijan’s state-run energy company, SOCAR, to improve the country’s energy systems by using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Partnership details
A new 13-year partnership will see two companies work together to install a modern Smart Gas Grid Management System across all of Azerbaijan’s AzeriGas service area. This was announced in a joint statement on Monday.
The companies explained that the smart systems with advanced meters will help track gas usage, detect leaks, and improve gas flow, making energy use more efficient and cutting down on emissions. This project supports the goal of COP28 to double energy efficiency by 2030, which is an important step toward achieving that target.
The partnership was announced during the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).
Rovshan Najaf, President of SOCAR, and Bipin Chandra, Board Director of IntelliGrid and CEO of Esyasoft Holding, signed the agreement, with Mikayil Jabbarov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy, and Ajay Hans Raj Bhatia, CEO of Digital Transformation at International Holding Company, also present.
Najaf emphasized that the partnership is an important step toward creating a stronger, more sustainable energy sector, using AI technology to improve gas systems and cut emissions, setting a new standard in the region for energy management.
Chandra highlighted that the agreement would modernize Azerbaijan’s gas distribution system, making it more efficient, reliable, and sustainable.
IntelliGrid, founded in 2024 as a joint venture between Esyasoft Holding and Presight AI, focuses on improving utility networks through data insights and eco-friendly practices. Presight, part of the Abu Dhabi-based company G42, is a leader in big data analytics and AI. Esyasoft Holding is known for its innovative smart solutions in the energy sector.

“This partnership uses IntelliGrid’s AI technology to improve data analysis, predict maintenance needs, and monitor the gas distribution network in Azerbaijan. This will help to reduce gas waste, optimize usage, and improve overall operations,” said Abdul Karim Sawan, CEO of IntelliGrid.
AzeriGas service area
Azeriqaz Production Union (PU), part of SOCAR, is responsible for distributing and supplying natural gas in Azerbaijan. It serves 2.6 million customers and operates more than 73,000 kilometers of pipelines, with a gas coverage rate of 97%.
Azeriqaz PU, which was established in the mid-1900s, supplies over 7 billion cubic meters of gas every year. Its network covers both urban and rural areas and includes 11 regional offices and over 70 service centers, not including the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
